Introduction. The rear service is a specific activity aimed at providing comprehensive material and technical support for the functioning of the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation. In modern conditions, the requirements for employees of rear units are increasing, including the level of their professional competence, as well as physical fitness and firearms training proficiency. The existing system of departmental education cannot meet the current need for specialists in the rear service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. Mentoring is an effective tool for solving the problem of retaining and replenishing qualified staff. A factor is an essential circumstance in a process or phenomenon. Significant mentoring design factors in the rear units of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs include: the characteristics of the manager’s personality, the regulatory and legal regulation of mentoring, and the sociopedagogical characteristics of the service team. Methods. The study uses analysis of regulatory and legal sources, scientific research, questionnaires, interpretation, and synthesis. Results. The questionnaire survey revealed the socio-pedagogical characteristics of the employees of the rear service in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Omsk (gender, age, marital status, level and field of study, length of service). The conditions for organising mentoring (diversity of age and gender groups, presence of pedagogical experience) and risks (shortage of potential mentors due to possible breaks related to pregnancy and childbirth, as well as termination of employment and retirement) were identified.
