Annotation Introduction. Operational investigative activities are impossible without the staff of the operational investigative body receiving information of operational interest about the facts of the preparation and commission of crimes by criminal elements, mostly behind the scenes. Research methods. The work used a general scientific dialectical method of cognition of the surrounding reality, which involves a complete and comprehensive study of phenomena, consideration of connections and contradictions between them. In addition, the method of description was used; the method of logical comprehension; abstraction and generalization. Results. An employee of the operational investigative body in his daily activities receives information about the preparation for the commission of crimes and about the facts of crimes already committed from various sources, using public and secret methods of work. The main one is a survey in any of its manifestations, whether it is an "intelligence survey", "intelligence conversation", "confidential conversation", etc. The listed options are an integral part of the operational contact. In this regard, we consider it necessary to formulate our own definition of the act of interaction of an operational officer with persons of operational interest. "Operational contact" should be understood as the process of interaction of an employee of an operational unit with an object of operational interest, due to the need to obtain operationally relevant information and (or) involve a person in the preparation and conduct of operational investigative measures, using public and secret methods of operational investigative activities.
