Abstract. Introduction. The relevance of the research is related to the increased demands of society for the professional training of graduates. The new educational paradigm focuses the teacher on the inclusion of new technologies in the process of foreign language education. The aim of the study is to substantiate the effectiveness of using project activity in professionally oriented foreign language teaching. The paper discusses the possibilities of project activity for the use of applied knowledge of special disciplines and the development of communicative competence. Methods. The theoretical analysis of scientific and methodological literature, the systematization of materials on the research problem and the empirical method have been used as the main research methods. Results. The described methodological approach is illustrated by the example which was successfully realized in the educational process. Scientific novelty of the study lies in substantiation of the introduction the project activity together with traditional methods of foreign language teaching. Project activity gives an incentive to cognitive abilities of trainees', increases their motivation, i.e. it is appropriated as efficient and advisable method for improving practical mastery of foreign language. As a result it has been proved that knowledge quality of specialists’ changes from Elementary level to Upper-intermediate and this method can be recommended for implementation in the system of the Interior of Russia.
