Educational migration: the risks of socio-psychological disorientation of foreign postgraduate student

Introduction. In recent years, Russia has become an attractive direction for educational migration, and that updates the study of sociocultural adaptation processes of foreign postgraduate students. The earlier identification of their socio-psychological disorientation risks in the context of a cultural distance obtains its particular significance. Methods: Review and analysis of scientific literature, complex of qualitative psychological-pedagogical methods – participant observation, informal conversations, interview. Scientific-practical conferences have become both the place of participant observation and the main channel for sample formation, which has ensured naturality in the participants’ selection and data reliability. The use of a qualitative strategy of empirical research is connected with the sensory nature of the problem under study and the choice of intercultural interaction format, which promotes to establish trust and the authentic data obtaining. The research was conducted in compliance with the principles of voluntary participation, confidentiality and anonymity. Digital translation assistive tools were used to overcome the language barrier. The complex nature of the methods used to survey the risks of socio-psychological disorientation of foreign postgraduate students ensured triangulation of data, increased reliability of analysis and validity of results interpretation. Results: It has been established that the socio-psychological disorientation of foreign postgraduate students intensifies under influence of language and cultural barriers, economic restrictions and the perception of external environment as a potential threat to personal security. The results received confirm the need for systemic support of educational migrants. Successful adaptation and integration of educational migrants in the new sociocultural environment requires targeted language support programs, formation of a sustained motivation of thesis defence, socio-psychological support at all stages of their education, preparation of scientific leaders to work with foreign educational subjects, formation of an inclusive culture in society.
