Relevance: The growing migration into the Russian Federation and the intensification of interethnic tensions require scholarly examination of the socio-psychological mechanisms underpinning perceptions within the host society. The research problem lies in the contradiction between the objective necessity of migrant integration and the subjective barriers arising from cultural differences, stereotypes, and mutual prejudices. This study examines foreign male migrants’ perceptions of Russian citizens as a barometer of interethnic relations. Methods. The study involved 102 foreign citizens from Armenia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan residing in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Smolensk. The sample was multi-stage, stratified by geographic region, all male, with a mean age of 25.7 ± 2.5 years. The primary instrument was Ch. Osgood’s Semantic Differential. Respondents rated nineteen pairs of opposing adjectives across four dimensions: moral-ethical, professional, communicative, and behavioural. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and cluster analysis using Statistics 27. Results. Foreign respondents’ perceptions of Russian citizens were not uniform; they were differentiated and largely based on personal experience of interaction. Cluster analysis of positive attributes revealed three clusters: moral, professional, and integrative. The data indicate a predominance of egocentric and partial ethnocentric levels of perception suggesting that the evaluations are driven by the fundamental need of foreign citizens to construct a positive social identity, which in turn serves as a basis for building cooperative relationships. The findings may be used to develop measures for reducing xenophobia and improving intercultural interaction.
