Introduction. In the context of the global information landscape, complex digital systems and personalisation algorithms, threats to privacy and personal security are intensifying. Digital freedom is regarded as the right to personal space in the virtual world, and spontaneous adaptive strategies – self-protection coping mechanisms – are developed to safeguard this space. Methods. The study employed methods of scientific analysis, as well as quantitative and qualitative experimental techniques (a questionnaire designed by the author, an analysis of the criminological situation in the Republic of Tatarstan with regard to cybercrime, and expert interviews). The experiment was conducted amongst digital audiences (118 respondents in person, 315 online). Results. Digital freedom correlates with a lack of control (64 %), the ability to do anything online (57 %) and the freedom to express one’s opinion (33 %). The leading self-protection strategies among the “Z-generation” are: law-abiding behaviour and adherence to general rules (74 %), anonymity and obfuscation of digital footprint data (61 % and 60 %, respectively), and anticipating consequences (48 %). Conclusion. The hypothesis that effective self-defence strategies are formed through an understanding of the value of digital freedom and the resources of the information sphere has been confirmed.
